Tommy & Tammy rushed home because they were getting something in the mail.  “Is it here?” asked Tammy.  “Is what here?” replied Mom.  “Our detective kit that Tommy & I ordered.”  “Oh, yes, It’s on the kitchen counter.”  The twins took off towards the kitchen.  Tommy opened it while Tammy’s eyes were clued on the package.  “Here’s your badge” said Tommy.   “What else is in there?” Tammy said while still looking at the package.  Tommy gave her a separate box to open and she tore into it.  “Hey look there’s a compass and two walkie talkies.” said Tammy.  “And look at this; It’s a book explaining how to be a private detective.”  They both started reading the book.  Then Tommy said, “Let’s take all this stuff out to the tree house.”  & off they went.

The next day couldn’t come soon enough for the twins.  They both had a hard time doing their morning devotions but Dad insisted they read a little more. (They were required to read a little more on Saturdays.)  She then asked them what their verses said.  “It talks about Hophni & Phinehas and how they were phonies.” Tammy said.  “Phinehas the Phony” Tommy added.  “Why would you say they were phonies?” Mom asked   Tammy went on to say that the brothers did not respect God’s work.  “What happened to them?” Dad asked.  Tommy said, “We didn’t get that far yet.  Can we go now?” Both twins asked almost at the same time.  “Yes, but think about this lesson today.”  “OK” they said as they headed out the door.

Once they got to the tree house they spread out all their spy stuff.  “Hey, it says right here that you have to be very secretative” Tommy said.  Tammy went on to say that she noticed that a new person moved in down the road and he looked very suspicious.  Both the twins talked about the man and decided to call him: “Sim One” They did that because the book told them to speak in code over the walkie Talkies.  “Let’s go.” said Tommy.

The twins got to his place and peaked in his window.  They watched him walk out of his house about a half hour later.  “Let’s follow him” Tammy said.   “OK” (His place was just on the outside of town and was not too far down the road from the twin’s house.)  The twins stayed back from the man and watched him walking down the road.  “Hey, look he’s going into the hardware store.”  Tammy said.  “Let’s watch through the window.”  Tommy said.  The twins watched the man and began to comment on how he was looking the things on the shelves but not buying anything.  “I think he’s going to rob it, he didn’t even buy anything.”  Tommy said.  “He’s coming out, run.”  Tommy said.

The man went back to his place and the twins grew bored of just sitting among the trees so they went back to the tree house and went through their spy material.

The entire family was coming home from church the next day and Dad asked the kids what the Pastor spoke on.  “It was the same thing as our devotion on Friday.” Tammy said.  “Yea, it was on phoniness.”  Tommy added.  The family talked over the sermon, as they were walked in the house.

The next morning the twins were walking down the hallway of the school when Tommy’s friend Billy came up to him.  “Hey, watch this.” Billy said as he went over and knocked the books out of smaller kid’s arms.  Tommy laughed but Tammy gave him a look of disgust. Tommy then went with Billy and since what Billy did got a lot of laughs he did it again after the kid had picked up all his books.  Only this time Billy stepped on the books.  The boys just walked past them.  Although Tommy felt rotten he still didn’t want to look bad in Billy’s eyes.  After all Billy was extremely popular.

After school the twins joined together on the bus to go home.  Tammy mentioned to Tommy about how horrible it was how Billy treated the little boy.  Tommy was just really quiet and changed the subject.  “Let’s get back to spying.”  Tommy said.  Tammy was less enthused, still thinking about the little boy.

When they got home the twins ran back to their tree house to get ideas on spying.  They read through their book and decided to do “surveillance” as the book said.  The twins ran towards the man’s house and stopped when they saw someone familiar.  “Hey, it’s the boy that Billy knocked his books down.” Tammy said.  The twins watched as the man met the kid in front of the house.  The man was yelling him, asking him why he was late and also why his books looked like some cow had walked on em.  The boy just kept his head down and wouldn’t say a word.

Tommy felt horrible.  He felt like it was his fault.  Tammy told Tommy that he should go over and explain what happened to the man.  Tommy just ran as fast as he could towards home.  Both the twins were very quiet that night.

The next morning the twins opened their Bible for devotions before school.  They read about how Eli’s sons both died in battle because of the disrespect they had for the things of God.  Tommy was feeling the weight of the words but kept quiet.  “Phony” kept going through his mind as he headed to school.

Nearly the same scenario happened at school that morning.  Billy went up to the new kid and was about to push his books down.  But this time Tommy stepped in and told Billy not to do it.  As the boy slipped away Billy got into Tommy’s face and said, “Well, well Mr. Good boy, maybe I should push your books down.”  Tommy didn’t say anything but just walked away.  Tommy didn’t hear Billy say anything more because Tammy was telling him that she thought that was great.

When the twins got home after school, Tammy told Mom & Dad all that happened.  Dad called Tommy to the kitchen.  Tommy came in with his head down.  “What did you learn son?”  Dad asked.  “Dad, I was a phony, when I watched the kid being picked on.  I kept on thinking of how bad God thought of phonies.  I decided I didn’t want to be like that so I told Billy not to do it.  I won’t be popular anymore.” Tommy said.  “Son, you may not be popular but you’ll have a peace in your heart because you did what was right.”  Eli didn’t stand up to his sons when they bullied the people and he allowed the glory of God to depart from Israel.  Son, you were salt today.  You spread the Kingdom of God and you may not be able to see the results now but you will someday.”  “Thanks Dad” Tommy said as he walked into his room feeling good about not being a “Phony”.
