Self Control
Tommy found a new friend. His name was Bill. Tammy was a little bothered because her and Tommy use do a lot of things together but now Tommy was with Bill a lot.
”Let’s go downtown after school” Bill told Tommy. Tommy explained that he had to go home first, get his homework done and then he could go play. Bill would go with Tommy and waited outside until his homework was done but continually bugged him about going downtown.
One day Bill told Tommy that he had a secret but would only tell him if he went with him after school. At first Tommy said no but it worked on him all day. Finally at the end of the day he told Bill that he would go. Instead of getting on the bus the two walked down town. It wasn’t a big town and it seemed like not too much going on but Bill would change that.
“Come here” Bill said. “I really should have gone home,” Tommy replied. They walked down an alley and Bill turned over a trash can. Under the trash can was a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. A few more boys joined them. Tommy recognized the boys as the ones who were getting into a lot of trouble at school. One of the boys had pulled a fire alarm at school the month previous.
Tommy was getting more scared. He remembered his Kid’s Church lesson on Self-Control. He began to hear his teacher’s voice. Mr. Trent told the class that the Holy Spirit would help in tough times. His thoughts were interrupted by the boys urging him to take a puff.
Tommy stood there not moving. He didn’t want to look weak and he didn’t want to do wrong. Tommy then remembered that Mr. Trent saying that God would make a way of escape. Quietly Tommy prayed a quick prayer asking for a way out. Right at that time a police car drove past the alley and the boys seen it. They threw down the cigarettes and ran. Tommy didn’t run. The police car stopped and an officer got out. The officer walked over by Tommy and looked down at the cigarettes. “Isn’t your dad’s name Joe?”
Tommy gulped and said yes.
The officer called Tommy’s dad and waited until his dad got there. When Joe got there the officer talked to him. When they were finished talking the police car drove off leaving Tommy alone with his dad. They both walked to the car and silence filled the car as they drove home.
When they got home Tommy’s mom was waiting at the front door. They all came in at sat at the table. When ever one of the twins got in trouble they were allowed to tell there side of the story. Tommy explained everything that happened, even down to the point of praying for a way of escape.
Tommy’s Dad said he believed him and that the officer said that Tommy was not smoking. The officer also said that he knew the other boys and that they were constantly in trouble. Tommy’s Dad then told Tommy that he wasn’t to spend anymore time with Bill and that he would have to be disciplined for not coming home right away. Tommy was so relieved to be home and out of that situation. He didn’t like that “bad” feeling and loved his home and the “good” feeling he got from it.
